Coordination Chemistry: Coordination Isomers

The compounds [Cr(NH3)5(SO4)]Br and [Cr(NH3)5Br]SO4 are examples of coordination isomers. Carefully examine the structures shown below. In this pair of examples, the counter-ions are included in the display. The positions of the counter-ions are fixed relative to the complexes in these displays, but in solution the complex ion and counter-ion move independently of each other.

  1. What is the difference between the two coordination isomers?
  2. Formulate a definition for the term "coordination isomers".
  3. Coordination isomers are sometimes called ionization isomers. Why is ionization isomer a sensible name for this type of isomerization?
pentaamminesulfatochromium(III) bromide pentaamminebromochromium(III) sulfate
