Experiment: Plots of Partial Vapor Pressures

This JAVA applet plots the partial vapor pressures of the components in one of three solutions versus the mole fraction of one component. Enter the mole fraction, select a solution, and click on the "Partial P vs X" button to obtain a plot of the experimental partial vapor pressures. Click the "Raoult's Law" button to add the Raoult's Law approximations of the of partial vapor pressures to the plot or click the "Henry's Law" button to include the Henry's Law approximations of the partial vapor pressures of the solute. The experimental and approximate total vapor pressures of the solution and the mole fraction of one component in the vapor phase are displayed in the upper right hand corner of the plot. The yellow vertical line indicates the value of the mole fraction in the liquid phase that was entered.

Use the applet to design and perform experiments that will help you to answer the following questions.

  1. Which solution is nearly an ideal solution?
  2. Which solution exhibits positive deviation from an ideal solution?
  3. Which solution exhibits negative deviation?
  4. Determine the vapor pressure of pure acetone.
  5. If acetone is the solute in a diethyl ether - acetone solution, what is Henry's constant, k, for acetone in this solution?
