Experiment: Stoichiometry III


    The JAVA applet below simulates two gaseous reactions in a closed container. The molecules of the reactants A , B, and D are symbolically represented by red, blue, and cyan balls. The green and mustard balls represent molecules of the products C and E. Enter the number of molecules of A, the number of molecules of B, and the number of molecules of D and click the "Start" button to begin the simulation. The number of A, B, or D molecules should not exceed 30. Allow the reactions to go to completion. Click the "Stop" button to end the simulation. When the simulation stops, the number of molecules of compounds A, B, C, D, and E at the instant of cessation are displayed above the reaction container.     Use the applet in the design and performance of experiments to answer the following questions.

  1. Enter 6 for the number of A molecules, 6 for the number of B molecules, and 0 for the for the number of D molecules and then click the "Start" button. Describe what you observe.
  2. Enter 6 for the number of A molecules, 0 for the number of B molecules, and 6 for the for the number of D molecules and then click the "Start" button. Describe what you observe.
  3. Enter 0 for the number of A molecules, 6 for the number of B molecules, and 6 for the for the number of D molecules and then click the "Start" button. Describe what you observe.
  4. Enter 12 for the number of A molecules, 6 for the number of B molecules, and 6 for the for the number of D molecules and then click the "Start" button. Describe what you observe.
  5. Write balanced chemical equations for the chemical reactions that you observed in the previous experiments (1, 2, 3, 4).
  6. If 12 molecules of A, 6 molecules of B , and 4 molecules of of D are placed in the container, which reactant or reactants are limiting and how many molecules of the other reactant or reactants will remain after the completion of the reactions?
  7. If 10 molecules of A, 6 molecules of B , and 6 molecules of of D are placed in the container, which reactant or reactants are limiting and how many molecules of the other reactant or reactants will remain after the completion of the reactions?
  8. A mixture of B and D molecules is placed in the container with an excess of A molecules. After all of the B and D molecules have been consumed in the reactions, 6 C molecules and 10 E are found in the container. How many B and D molecules were in the original mixture?

    Include data from your experiments to support your answers to the questions.
