Experiment: Stoichiometry
Ethylborane is the product in the hydroboration reaction
between borane and ethylene (H2CCH2). An animation of this reaction is found
below. The hydrogen atoms appear as white balls. The green ball represents
a boron atom, and the gray balls represent the carbon atoms. View the
the animation and then answer the following questions.
Chime 2.6 is required for the animation.
- Briefly describe what occurs as the product ethylborane is formed.
- What is the chemical formula for borane?
- What is the chemical formula for ethylborane?
- Are hydrogen atoms, boron atoms,or carbon atoms consumed or produced during the formation
of ethylborane?
- How many dozens of borane molecules and dozens of ethylene molecules are needed to
prepare 2 dozen molecules of ethylborane?
- How many moles of ethylborane will be prepared from 4 moles of borane and 4 moles of
ethylene?
- Write a balanced chemical equation for the hydroboration reaction.
