Valence-Shell Electron-Pair Repulsion (VSEPR) Model

Exercise

Choose a molecule or ion from the list below. (Do not click on the molecule yet!)

  1. Determine the central atom and draw the best Lewis Structure for the molecule.
  2. Predict the molecular geometry using the VSEPR approach.
  3. Predict the ideal bond angles.
  4. Predict whether the actual bond angles are ideal, smaller than ideal or larger than ideal.
  5. Predict the hybridization of the central atom.
  6. Write the chemical name of the molecule or ion.

Check your answers by clicking on the molecule. Be sure to rotate the molecule to clearly see its shape from different angles.
